What are the Common Face Materials for RFID Labels?

In order to obtain a perfect quality RFID self-adhesive paper label, in addition to configuring high-quality chips and antennas, a reasonable selection of label face materials is also a very important link. The surface materials is the carrier of the label printing content. According to its material, it can be divided into art paper, PET, thermal paper, fragile paper, PP synthetic paper, PVC, thermal transfer paper, removable adhesive paper, writing paper, pearl film, etc. Here are a few common face materials in RFID tags to give you a detailed introduction.

1. Art Paper

Art paper also known as coated printing paper. It is the most widely used surface material in RFID tags. It is a high-grade printing paper made of base paper coating and white coating. The requirements for coated base paper are uniform thickness, small stretchability, high strength and good water resistance. There are no spots, wrinkles, holes and other paper defects on the paper surface. The paint used for coating is composed of high-quality white pigments, adhesives and auxiliary additives.

Features: Not waterproof, not oil-proof, easy to tear. Scratching hard on the surface of the paper, there is no obvious scratch on the surface. There are matte, plain and bright.

Scope of application: outer box labeling, inventory management, supply chain management, clothing hangtags, asset management, logistics management, etc.

Among the various brands in the world, American Avery Dennison's art paper and Japanese Oji Paper have the best user feedback, especially the American Avery art paper has the best performance. Its white ultra-smooth non-coated paper is an excellent basic material for thermal transfer printing. The RFID art paper labels produced by Nanning XGSun are all imported from Avery Dennison’s art paper, and the thickness is generally 80g. The thickness of the hangtag is double-sided 200g coated paper. Our company has customized UHF RFID labels and hangtags for Walmart projects, and these tags are in compliance with ARC certification.

2. Thermal Paper

Thermal paper also known as thermal fax paper, thermal recording paper, thermal copy paper and thermal sensitive paper. Thermal paper is a kind of processed paper. Its manufacturing principle is to coat a layer of "heat-sensitive paint" (heat-sensitive color-changing layer) on high-quality base paper. The surface coating is directly contacted with the heat-generating print head, it turns black due to a chemical reaction when exposed to heat, thereby showing the text to be printed.

Features: Not waterproof, not oil-proof, easy to tear, if you scratch the paper surface hard, there will be obvious black scratches (so it is also called thermal transfer paper)

Scope of application: It is mostly used for labels on electronic scales in supermarkets, a kind of hot paper in cash registers, etc. It is also suitable for labels on shelves such as cold storage and freezers.

The RFID air luggage tag exported by XGSun recently uses a composite thermal paper as its surface material, which is a more advanced thermal paper material. This tag can also be printed and written into internal data according to customer needs.

3. PP Synthetic Paper (Synthetic Paper)

PP synthetic paper is made of bidirectional stretching of polyolefin material and inorganic filler material. It maintains the advantages of plastic materials, and at the same time has the excellent printability of paper. The surface material can provide high surface performance printing resolution and printing gloss, high whiteness and long-lasting products.

Features: soft texture, strong tensile strength, not easy to tear, waterproof, oil-proof, light-resistant and heat-resistant, and resistant to chemical corrosion without environmental pollution, recyclable. It is matte.

Scope of application: Widely used in the printing of high-end artworks, maps, picture albums, high-end books and periodicals, etc. Among the orders of our company in recent years, the UHF RFID labels of PP synthetic paper are most widely used in RFID tire labels, RFID windshield tags, RFID asset management labels and RFID jewelry tags.

4. PET

PET is the abbreviation of Polyethylene terephthalate, actually it is a polymer material. PET has good hardness and brittleness, can withstand a certain high temperature, resist harsh environments, and resist corrosion by chemicals such as acids and alkalis. It is very suitable for outdoor labels and labels with higher quality requirements. The polyester material is thin but strong, and the surface coating is good for ink adhesion, but it needs UV light to cure during the printing process. High-performance adhesives are suitable for a variety of surfaces, and are applied to product logos after processing and printing.

Features: not easy to tear, stiff material, high temperature resistance, stable size, opacity and chemical corrosion resistance, good natural degradability, suitable for making various durable labels. The common colors are matte silver, matte white, bright silver, bright white and transparent.

Scope of application: PET is suitable for making various durable labels. Most of XGSun's RFID jewelry labels use PET as face material of the label.
